Generation 1, Chapter 1

Peter Van Winkle, most commonly known as the absent minded professor by his esteemed family. Peter's Father is a well known scientist in Bridgeport and his Mother is on the cutting edge of advanced technology. Peter's older brothers are both aspiring scientists, upholding the family's standard of excellence. Then we have Peter, a genius in his own right but he has the inability to remember what he is doing from one minute to the next. Peter has been the direct cause of many failed experiments and explosions than anyone else at the science lab.

The last major explosion resulted in the destruction of his Father's irreplaceable research. The research that his Father spent half his life accumulating, gone in an instant. Peter not only lost his position at the Science Lab, his Father disowned him. Left with no job and no family, Peter had little choice but to leave Bridgeport to start a new life. A new legacy free from all that he has ever known.

Peter had one desire, to prove himself as a worthy, brilliant scientist, the equal to his Father. To accomplish this he had to begin again somewhere remote, not influenced by the rumors in the science community. Peter sent his resume to several science facilities. Peter received one response with a job offer as a Test Subject. Grimacing inwardly Peter accepted, promising himself that he would work his way up to the top. He would prove that he had what it takes to be a leading scientist and be a contender with his Father.

After accepting his new lowly position, Peter moved to Appaloosa Plains. He bought a large, empty lot where he built a small, one room house with attached bathroom. He had everything he needed. After stopping by the science lab to fill out paperwork to begin employment, he met Vallari Chandra outside. Peter thought at first she was another scientist but after talking with her for a while he knew that wasn't the case. However Peter was attracted to Vallari; although he got the impression that she was bit self-absorbed. Peter was encouraged by this as he had no desire to enter into a relationship with someone whom he would have to compete with mentally and in the science community. He had too many memories of heated arguments between his parents and brothers involving their experiments or achievements. Her shallow personality would be a relief, compared to the pressures of his profession.

Peters days settled into a continuous monotonous routine. Get up, go to work, come home, eat, read a book, go to bed. One day Peter decided to purchase a chemistry lab so that he could research potions he could use at the science lab. It wasn't going extremely well, as he constantly forgot what chemicals he mixed and caused minor explosions. But if persistence pays off, he would eventually be rich!

  1. LOL, Peter sounds like a fun guy, his forgetfulness makes me laugh. I thought it was funny when you said he appreciated Vallari's shallowness. I can understand it, haha, no pressure from her about anything can be relaxing, especially since it sounds like Peter's family wasn't very relaxed. :)

    1. Peter wants to have some fun and enjoy life. Growing up his parents demanded perfection; which only contributed more to his forgetfulness. He wants to impress them but he's always messing things up so hopefully moving and working in a different facility will help Peter relax and achieve his goals. Vallari and her shallowness seems to be a good thing for Peter as he doesn't want to compete with anyone. He has too many bad memories of his parents fighting. But Vallari may not be as shallow as she appears and has an agenda all her own. Peter may regret ever having met her.

    1. Peter is the lovable and likable scientist. I don't think he has to worry about the chemicals, he'll have other problems to deal with.
      Thank you for reading!

    2. Peter is funny! I laughed when you described his forgetfullness about mixing certain chemicals, he's lucky he hasn't blown himself up! Hopefully he wont end up doing that! Great start so far, look forward to reading more! I see I have a lot to catch up on. :)

  4. Peter is funny! He better be careful while mixing those chemicals so he doesn't cause an explosion or some other horrible effect! That would be exciting, yet tragic! Great start! I look forward to catching up more with the story!!!

    1. Peter is funny as the absent minded professor. If only not exploding himself was his only problem, his life would have been so much easier. As many times as his experiments have exploded in his face he hasn't experienced anything horrible from it, except may a few singed nose hairs. :)
Thank you for reading and commenting!

  7. Poor Peter! It's not like he was trying to destroy his father's research. . . :)

I like his reasoning for liking Vallari; not wanting to have to compete with her. lol

On a side note, I think that is the same lot that Amanda from my story started out on and now is the home to the Hobble ranch. So fun to see it in someone else's story!

    1. No Peter didn't do it on purpose, unfortunately for Peter his father's research was more important than he was to his father. Plus the explosion may not be as it appears. I don't want to give anything away but it may come up again towards the end of the generation.

Vallari is not out to compete with him, at least not in that way.

There's so few empty lots on Appaloosa that I recognized the lot right off. Although the Hobble house is a lot nicer than Peters house. LOL
